A plain-language definition
Comprehensible input is language from which a learner can construct meaning. Some elements may be unfamiliar, but enough is understood through known language, context, visuals, background knowledge, or other support to follow what is being communicated.
Imagine watching someone make an omelet in a language you are learning. You may not know the word for “whisk,” but the bowl, eggs, hand movement, and sequence make the action understandable. That unfamiliar word is embedded in a meaningful event rather than presented as an isolated code.
Comprehension is not all-or-nothing. A video can be understandable at the level of its main story while many sentences remain fuzzy. Another can contain mostly familiar words but still be hard because of speed, jokes, unclear audio, or missing context.
Why meaning matters
Input provides examples of the language in use. When you understand a message, words and structures are connected to a communicative purpose: describing, requesting, explaining, disagreeing, entertaining, or telling a story. Repeated encounters can strengthen recognition and create opportunities to notice new details.
Audiovisual material offers several possible sources of support at once:
- speech supplies pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation;
- the scene and actions constrain what the words are likely to mean;
- faces and gestures communicate attention and emotion;
- a familiar topic supplies expectations;
- same-language captions can help segment the speech stream and connect sounds to written forms.
Research supports the general learning potential of audiovisual input and captioned viewing, but gains vary. Studies differ in learners, languages, materials, duration, and the knowledge they measure. “Video works” is therefore too broad; a better conclusion is that video can be a valuable source of language exposure under the right conditions.
What “i+1” means
Stephen Krashen popularized the shorthand i+1: input containing language slightly beyond the learner’s current competence. It communicates an intuitive principle—growth requires some novelty while comprehension keeps the message accessible.
It is not a precise formula. There is no instrument that reliably measures a learner’s complete current state as i, assigns every video a single objective +1, and predicts acquisition from the difference. Language knowledge is multidimensional, and a learner may be strong in one topic or dialect while struggling with another.
InputScout’s own choice to target videos a few points above an estimated ability score is a product heuristic inspired by the useful “manageable stretch” intuition. It is not a scientific implementation of Krashen’s notation and is not validated as an assessment.
Must you understand 90 percent?
No universal comprehension percentage applies to every task. Researchers have studied lexical coverage—the proportion of running words a learner knows—and higher coverage generally makes comprehension easier. But word knowledge is only one part of audiovisual comprehension.
A number such as 90%, 95%, or 98% can be useful within a particular study design, especially for written texts, but it should not become a personal pass/fail rule for every video. Images, repetition, genre, sentence complexity, speech rate, and background knowledge change the experience. “Could I follow the message?” is usually a better immediate question than “Did I know a prescribed percentage of words?”
Comprehensible does not mean effortless
Easy material can build fluency and automatic recognition. Stretching material can expose you to new language. Both belong in a healthy practice.
The useful boundary is not between “easy” and “difficult.” It is between productive challenge and persistent disorientation. Productive challenge lets you recover after missing a phrase. Persistent disorientation forces you to reconstruct nearly everything through translation, guessing, or repeated pausing.

Is input enough by itself?
Input is necessary, but researchers disagree about whether exposure alone explains all important parts of acquisition. Other perspectives emphasize interaction, attention, corrective feedback, output, explicit knowledge, memory, identity, and social context.
That disagreement has a practical upside: you do not need to turn one useful principle into an exclusive method. Meaning-focused viewing can coexist with conversation, pronunciation practice, tutoring, reading, writing, grammar study, or flashcards. Each activity creates different opportunities.
If your goal includes speaking, you eventually need chances to retrieve language and communicate under real constraints. If a grammar pattern remains opaque, a concise explanation may save time. If a few words are crucial to your life, deliberate study may be more efficient than waiting to encounter them incidentally.
A practical test
After a minute or two, pause and ask:
- Can I say what this is about without translating every sentence?
- Can I identify the speaker’s main intention or the sequence of events?
- When I miss something, can I rejoin the message soon afterward?
- Is the effort tolerable enough that I want to continue?
- Am I noticing at least a little language beyond what is already automatic?
Several “yes” answers suggest the input is workable. A run of “no” answers means you should add support or choose another video. Neither result is a judgment of your ability; it is information about the match.
The enduring principle
The most useful version of comprehensible input is modest: seek abundant language that carries meaning for you, accept incomplete understanding, adjust difficulty when meaning collapses, and return often enough for patterns to recur.
